Volunteer Opportunities
Please call 488-6921 to inquire about any of the opportunities below.

Adopt a Social Worker
Individuals or groups may “adopt” the needs of a social worker’s families, making either one-time or repeated donations of new or used items. There are also many ways to help children in foster care. They need the same things as other children, including school supplies, clothes, books, toys, games, gift certificates, recreational activities like dance classes, and most importantly an adult’s time. Persons Against Loneliness (PAL)
Visit older adults in nursing homes and facilities, providing companionship and interaction. Visit with adults who are under DSS guardianship. Take them out for activities, visit, and provide for those needs not covered with their small monthly stipend such as clothes and prescriptions. Christmas Project
Each Christmas many kind people in our community assist us with identifying needy families who require some assistance in order to make their Christmas a bit brighter. If you know of families in need, we ask that you make a referral to DSS during the months of November and early December. The Swain County Family Resource Center kindly coordinates this effort by matching needy children with sponsors, and also sees that the items are delivered to the families by Christmas. If you would like to sponsor a family please contact the Family Resource Center during the months of November and early December. For more information about this project, please call 488-7505.
Wheels to Work Program
Many of our clients have transportation issues which keep them from maintaining steady work. We are asking for the community’s help in this area. If you have a vehicle that you no longer need or you know someone who does, you might consider donating it to a client. Our agency will provide you with a receipt of donation for tax purposes.
